Gay firefighter here. I wouldn't call it common, at least not here, but I haven't encountered a lot of homophobia in my department. I'm open about my sexual orientation, I believe it is worse if you try to hide it in those environments. Some of the older generation still has a problem with it and doesn't really like talking about these

If you make it a thing, firefighters are like sharks in the water when they smell blood. They will exploit the weakness, even if just to poke fun, but it will still hurt you emotionally. Like I said, just dont make it a big deal. I have worked with plenty of gay dudes at the fire house and nobody gave a shit.

Gay firefighter/EMT here, and I must certainly agree with you on that point. At my current, smallish fire department, I'm the only gay guy (that's out at least). The department I previously worked at, before I really figured out I was gay, didn't have any gay and/or out members.
