I *think* you are confusing a "fire grate" like in a fire place, with an ash grate, like in most wood stoves.. The ash grate is built into the bottom of the stove, a fire grate sits atop the floor and holds the wood/fire off the bottom. My manual says never use a fire grate. and honestly, I never use the ash grate.lol

Hi all, I've got a project I'm trying to figure out if its feasible. I'd like to build my self a small cabin similar to Thoreau's on Walden pond. And I'd like to have an open hearth set up for cooking. For a number of reasons I'll be putting this on a trailer as a "tiny house", so a masonry fire place an chimney will not be possible.

If I were to build from scratch I would build a two flue chimney. One flue for a stove and a second for a fireplace, preferably inside the house with the mass exposed. Masonry behind a wood stove will absorb and give off alot of heat. I love my fireplace. Unfortunately it is an ouside chimney but is very well built and draws well.

Having an expert masonry heater mason come to your home to custom build the core runs about $8K. Facing is extra in both quotes but includes all doors, etc. To me, the option to buy a kit seems poor value since few people will be wanting a standard core IMHO and for an extra $2K, you get an expert to do all the work of design and build.

I clean the exhaust fan annually as well as the pipe all the way up. Obsidian-like residue does build up, especially when running Turman pellets, but the autoclean is struggling with no hard blisters on the plate, its getting stuck on softer chunks of slag, which again makes it seem like a motor, not some new buildup from using different pellets.
