The only smoke/co detector that isn't utter garbage is Nest Protect. It's the only thing I even consider. I don't know exactly what you require for the 'ecosystem' part but you don't have to pay them anything ongoing or whatnot, although you do need their app.

Smoke is the result of combustion, and is usually thought of as being visible. Fumes are usually thought of as being mostly invisible, and are the result of unpleasant substances evaporating, like paint or other chemicals. In the picture you posted, I would call that smoke.
